Missrepresentation

The documentary Missrepresentation shows different problems that the media displays against women. This includes how women are always looked at as sexual objects, if they are leaders they are a "bitch", many female icons are based off of what they look like instead of what they do, and how a rape culture is developed in boys because the media displays that they should be the dominate figure in the relationship. However, the one that was most interesting and most important is self-objectification and how women view each other in media.

The media constantly would display the beautiful, skinny, successful women, so when girls would look up at those women and not look like them, the tend to self-objectify. This then leads to many health problems. 78% of girls are unhappy with their bodies and 65% have eating disorders, while 17% of girls have cut themselves. This is because the media doesn't display that females are equal to men, because they constantly need to be saved by them in movies or need to find love in their life. This makes women ultimately feel like objects and then become unhappy with their bodies and who they are.

Another big problem with this is how women treat each other. Every single women is guilty of judging another women on how they look, the things they say, or the way that they act. Women are already treated terribly by men in the media yet women still objectify others. Women do that to try to get ahead in anyway that they can. Since they are already put down by males, they want to seem better by putting other women down.

The only way to fix this misrepresentation in media is if women become more involved it in it. Men have not and will not just let any woman in. Meaning that every girl has to work harder, try harder and ultimately be better then men in order to get recognized. But once more women are involved in media and politics, little girls will have a better viewing on what it is like to be a female. This dynamic could change the future but it has to start now!

  1. I agree with the fact that females put down other females. This is very clear to see in high school. Everyone is already judging themselves but also choose to judge others as well to make them feel better. I think that if we stop this then there can be positives, such as equality, in the future.
