Netflix

One of the main source of advertisements comes through commercials. While that is still very popular and important, especially because of sports, Netflix has created a little problem for companies.

Everyone is familiar with Netflix. It is an company where you pay around $10 a month to stream any television that is on the website. But what makes it so popular, is that there are no ads during the show. So, more and more people started paying for Netflix, just to not see the ads on TV. So how were products supposed to be advertised when less and less people are watching cable.

As a Netflix watcher, I have noticed different things within the movies, shows, and documentaries.  Different products are being placed within the entertainment. Even though this is not a new idea from Netflix, because a lot of shows are older and we created before Netflix became popular, I believe that in the recently created movies and tv shows more ads were implicated. For example, when someone is on their phone they make sure that the brand name is shown and that the actor does the cool new function that the phone has during the show. Another Example, when an actor is driving a car and they zoom in on the logo of the car and the car is very clean and polished to show how good the product is.

Ultimately, Netflix has caused companies to become more creative in trying to get people to buy their items in other ways on television that is not commercials.

  1. Very interesting topic and I hadn't thought that much about how companies had to improvise with the popularity of streaming service like Netflix and Hulu. I did just read an article about if Friends(popular Netflix series) were ever to be remade that the coffee shop would probably be Starbucks or other big coffee shop whoever was willing to pay that much. This was a great topic and continue the great work.

  2. Hi, it's really Ashley Jun because her blog comments don't work. "Personally, I never thought about how product placement has become this newfound area of advertisement. It’s because the audience doesn’t notice the show or film is meant to showcase the sponsored brand of soda or phone. Instead, people make a personal connection to those films and shows and one of the memories associated is with the product placements. This is definitely a creative cycle that advertisers have created, and I like how you pointed out Netflix for being a prime example. It hasn’t occurred to me that Netflix was going around their special of ‘Zero Ad Interruptions’ by using product placement. Your examples were very directed at the topic of Netflix using product placement, and I think that highlights the overall argument of how product placement is another populous field of advertisement."
