Media has been in my life for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, I would look to anything around me (billboards, ads, television, music) to try to understand the world I am living in. One of the most important influences that media has had on me is the models and body expectations. I remember always wanting to look and be like the girls that were displayed in the media. The girls were tall, white, brown and straight hair, skinny and most of all beautiful and about 90% of the time, I looked nothing like them. As I grew up, not only did the media female expectation change, but I realized that it is okay that I did not look like the girls that I always wanted to be. It it okay to be comfortable with the way I looked.
Another relationship I have with media is the use of voice. Media allows people to display who they are and how it is okay to be different now. However, you can never trust anyone over the internet because they could easily be lying. But different music styles and fashion choices that different people display shows how it is okay to be unique and not like everyone else. This also can contradict itself though. Teenagers will try to copy someones style or music because they think that makes them "cool." But my relationship with those in the media is that it is okay to be myself and not have to follow others.
Ultimately, my relationship has grown and changed immensely with the media. I also think that it has grown to a more positive lifestyle. But one quick turn could put me into a dark depressing whole as well.
