On Sunday, April 21st, Easter Day, an announcement that The Philadelphia Flyers Hockey Team is taking down a statue of Kate Smith. Kate Smith had a popular rendition of "God Bless America" which played at every hockey game (and other sports arenas as well). The Philadelphia Flyers had a statue of her to honor the song and the meaning it brought to the team. However, it was taken down because songs by Kate Smith have recently been discovered to contain racist lyrics and meanings. Therefore, the statue was taken down.
Two news stations that covered this subject were CNN and Sports Illustrated. Even though they covered the same story and had mostly the same information they way it was delivered was very different. First, we can see this in the titles. CNN said "The Philadelphia Flyers remove a statue of Kate Smith over her racist songs" while sports illustrated said "Flyers Remove Kate Smith Statue Outside Arena, Wont play version of 'God Bless America'." We can see just by the title that CNN focused more on the racial aspect, while Sports Illustrated focused more on the facts of the issue. CNN also used specific evidence to display to the reader how awful Kate Smith was and how the team was concerned about this issue, while Sports Illustrated just wrote what happened.
Ultimately, the language in media, can have different emotional effects on the audience.
